Our story · Kerala, India

Four generations. Nearly a century. A new chapter.

For nearly a century, the Thumpasserry family has been connected to plantation agriculture in Kerala. Now we are bringing that knowledge, and the spices themselves, straight to your kitchen.

01 — The beginning

This started with a family plantation business in the hills. It still does.

Our roots are in Kerala's Western Ghats, one of India's most celebrated agricultural landscapes. Across four generations, our family has built a deep familiarity with agricultural production, crop quality and sourcing, and with the people and communities behind India's agricultural sector.

That legacy is more than a family history. It is decades of knowing what good produce looks like at origin, and what it takes to grow it.

Van Rasoi, meaning “forest kitchen”, is the first step in a new journey: connecting Kerala's plantation heritage with modern consumers through traditional knowledge, responsible sourcing, scientific testing and a contemporary brand.

“Nearly 100 years and four generations of our family's involvement in plantation agriculture have given us a deep appreciation for the quality, knowledge and effort behind every agricultural product. With Van Rasoi, we are taking the next step: bringing that heritage directly to consumers.”

02 — Direct access

Unlike brands that buy through auctions, brokers or exporters, we start at the estate.

That access gives us sight of harvests early, real influence over how crops are handled, and fewer hands between the hillside and your kitchen.

Conventional spice trade

Many hands. Long journeys. Little evidence.

  1. Farm
  2. Local trader
  3. Auction / mandi
  4. Wholesaler
  5. Brand
  6. Shelf
  • Lots from many farms are blended, so origin is lost
  • Spice can sit in storage between each hand-off
  • Testing, if any, is not shared with the buyer
The Van Rasoi route

Fewer hands between the hillside and your kitchen.

  1. Estate & partners
  2. Van Rasoi
  3. Independent lab
  4. Your kitchen
  • Known origin and grade for every spice
  • Fewer intermediaries, fresher spice
  • Laboratory results linked to each batch
03 — Adaptive practice

Farmers change what they spray. We track why.

Crop-protection practices shift with climate, pests and yield pressure. That is why quality control cannot be a one-time recipe.

  1. Field procurement

    Collect usage data

At procurement, we record what was applied at estate level.

  2. Residue mapping

    Map residue profiles

Each source's pattern is tracked, not assumed.

  3. Process refinement

    Refine our process

Selection and processing are adjusted against real results.

  4. Final release

    Validate continuously

Every lot is checked at the laboratory before it is released.

04 — What we believe

Consumers deserve to know what goes into their food.

Quality, safety and purity should never be compromised, and should be backed by evidence, not claims.

Sourcing

Responsible, traceable sourcing

Spices sourced from estates and partners we know, kept to a single origin and grade, never anonymously blended.

Science

Science-led quality

A documented quality framework with systematic checks and independent laboratory testing for every lot.

People

Farmers in the value chain

Stronger, more transparent relationships with farmers and producers, so the communities behind our spices stay part of the story.
